Ninth International Conference on the Arts in Society

“The Lives of Art”
Sapienza University of Rome
Rome, Italy
25-27 June 2014

Conference Focus

The purpose of the annual Arts Conference is to create an intellectual platform for the arts and arts practices, and to create an interdisciplinary conversation on the role of the arts in society. It is intended as a place for critical engagement, examination and experimentation of ideas that connect the arts to their contexts in the world on stage, in studios and theaters, in classrooms, in museums and galleries, on the streets and in communities.
We are inviting proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, posters/exhibits, or colloquia (See Proposal Types) addressing the Arts in Society through one of the following themes:

Arts Education
New Media, Technology and the Arts
Arts Theory and History
Social, Political and Community Agendas in the Arts

Proposal ideas that extend beyond these thematic areas will also be considered. For more information about the ideas and themes underlying this community, see Our Focus.

We also offer participation options for those individuals who cannot attend the conference. Authors who wish to submit an article for potential publication in the Arts Collection may submit a Proposal for Article Submission, while all members of the knowledge community with an accepted proposal may submit an online presentation to the knowledge community YouTube channel.

Rome and The Arts in Society

The 2014 conference travels to Sapienza University of Rome’s Faculty of Architecture in Rome, Italy.
Rome, sometimes called the world’s largest open air museum, is a city where the past and present sit side by side. Alongside the historical sights of the “Eternal City”  the Colosseum, the Forum, St Peter’s Bascilica contemporary Rome blossoms with stunning new buildings, artists, film makers, and designers all finding new life in this capital city.
Sapienza University of Rome, founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII, is one of the oldest universities in the world and ranks among the world’s top universities. Situated in the heart of the city center, the Faculty of Architecture is a short walk from the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo, and Piazza Navona.
In this city, where old meets modern, the conference will provide a forum for interdisciplinary reflection on the nature and purposes of the arts, specifically as they are situated in everyday life, culture, economics and politics
